Greetings from Shady Grove

Welcome to the website about my writing and my music. I am the author of three collections of personal essays. My most recent book, called Bound for Shady Grove, is about my experiences learning to sing and play the traditional music of the Appalachian mountains where I live.

I also play old-time banjo and write a regular column for Banjo Newsletter called "Banjos at the Border."

On this homepage you can find out about my books and hear some banjo tunes I learned while writing Bound for Shady Grove.
